24 May 981, Tuesday, Continued
Fine spring weather, partly cloudy, cool
Drigbolton

They head up the stairs and enter the central hall.  Godfred
tells them that the Laird's Far Seer is through the bedroom
which is behind that locked door there.  There is a spare
key downstairs.  Listening at the door they hear fabric snapping
as if in a breeze.  Valldel is able to pick the lock.  Within
Shiso sees that the bed has morphed into a small sailing
ship.  It is manned by animated clothes, shirts and pants,
which are behaving like sailors.

They debate what to do.  Valldel wants to start a fire, but
the others are too worried that it would destroy the Manor.
Shiso notices a book on a dresser called the Pirates of the
Central Sea.  They gather it without attracting the attention
of the clothes.  It is a history book.  They decide to
destroy it, but upon doing so nothing has changed.

They decide to try to sneak through to the door that leads
to the Liard's library and then the Far Seer.  It is not
successful and the clothes begin attacking by flaying
with heavy brass buttons.  They are difficult to deal with
as piercing weapons are useless and slashing weapons do
only minor damage.  Grappling and tearing at them is often
more effective.  While it takes awhile they defeat the clothes
suffering only minor damage.

The next room is the Laird's private library.  There are many books
on the natural sciences and a menagerie of stuffed animals
and birds.  There is a door that Godfred says leads to the
Far Seer.  They go through and enter a room dominated by a
large brass telescope.  There is a ladder to access the dome
opening and moving mechanism, a table with an observing log,
and a worn chair.  The telescope has its lens cap on and the
dome is closed.  Reading the observing log reveals over the
last week or so the Laird was tracking something that was
falling from space, collaborated with Griya, and someone
named Muzzahs.  He also mentions Ashkott who Valldel recognizes
as a distinguished Professor at the White College in Leechfeld
which is a few days journey to the east.  He sees a "conjunction"
next to the Moon, and an object falling from the moon towards
the surface.  He writes that he has informed Griya, Muzzahs,
the three at the White College, Pye (the mad mage who lives
in the Cairn Chase Forest), Obediah, Dunston, Bellas, William,
Benjamin, and Fred the Shed (the notorious serial killer who
is imprisoned in the Middlemoor Goal).  Akadum is very upset
at the latter part of the observing log which describes the
object falling as being destroyed in an enounter with "swirls
of fire".

Where is the Laird?  Godfred suggests that he may be in his
private laboratory in the basement, which is accessed via
a closet off the sitting room where the six well dressed
hungry, demanding gentleman are.  They finish exploring
the second floor, finding two empty guest bedrooms,
and Godfred's room.

They debate on how to deal with the six gentleman.
Shiso suggests providing them breakfast as they
were asking.  Godfred prepares six meals, cutting
up some cured meats, and bread with butter and jam.  They
enter serving the gentleman, who seem to hungrily
tuck into the meals and pay no attention to what the party
is doing.  The party notes that the gentleman are actually
two dimensional.  Clearly they are the painting come to life.
While distracted by their meal, the party slips into the
small room leading to the basement.

This is a closet with
a locked trap door leading befow.  Valldel is able to
pick the lock, and Valldel and Dolin lead the way
down a ladder into the darkness below.  The zombified
Laird attacks them as Dolin illuminates the lab.
The Zombie Laird emits a piercing scream which discomfits
Akadum and sends him fleeing into a corner, but the others
manage to gang up on the horror and kill it.  They notice
that he has been pierced by many rapier wounds.

They gather up a spell book called the Black Book of Llaregubb,
which Valldel can tell has two low level spells, two middle level
spells, and two high level spells.  It is clearly quite valuable.
There is the six volume work called the Encyclopedia of Stellar
Anatomy by Calcidus the Stargazer.  These are gorgeous books full
of color plates of cellestial objects.  It is also likely
to be quite valuable.  There is an untitled
book bound in plush red velvet.  Attached to it by a ribbon is
a silver spoon.  The book has extraordinary vivid pictures of
butterflies.  When the spoon touches one page, the butterfly comes
alive and begin flitting about the room.  Touching the butterfly
again with the spoon has no effect.  The fourth books is an unbound
bunch of hand written pages.  It is clearly the Laird's lab note
book and has hundreds of pages of notes, results of experiments,
musings, etc.

Two items here draw their interest.  One is a description of the
"Clooney Caves" which are within the Moon Peaks where the Laird
and others trade with Goblins for mushrooms with unusual properties.
Also there is an ancient Serpant Man called Xiximanter who provides
powerful potions in exchange for magic user blood or body parts.
There is a sketch map revealing the location of the Clooney Caves.
The Laird mentions collaborations with Griya in Drigbolton,
Muzzahs the Magnificent in Helix (village 1.5 days to the west),
Obediah Hawkes in Brignorth (village south of Tealford which is
the town one day to the east), and Pye, the mad mage of the
Cairn Chase Forest at the center of the Midlands.

The second is a musing on the Tablet of Chaos, some sort of
powerful artifact that the Laird thinks can be used against
the Moran Empire.  He locates it a tomb complex called the
Barrowmaze which is in the Barrowmoor south of Helix.  He
mentions Ashkott, Leptoblast, and Zenithal, who Valldel notes
are the three distinguished Professors of the White Collge
in Leechfeld, and have written texts on the Tablet.  The Laird
apparently sent an expedition to the Barrowmaze, and
Muzzahs in Helix reports that it disappeared into
the swamp.  He talks about Fred the Shed who claims to
know nothing about the Tablet, but should, and has clearly
sent expeditions to the Barrowmaze.  Finally he says that he
has urged Stana Binnety in Woodfall to mount an expedition
to the Barrowmaze.  He has made a sketch map of the Barrowmoor
which has on it Helix, Ironguard Motte, the Barrowmaze, Bogton,
Frogmen, Bog Witches, Frogmen, Goblins, and Woodfall.

Valldel searches for samples of mushrooms but only finds many
candles and science lab equipment (beekers, spoons, etc.).
There are many candles and burned down candles in and around
the desk at the far end of the room.

In the middle of the room is a large silver wire cage.  It is
large enough to contain a human and has a simple latch.  It
it is not strong enough to hold any one who tried to get out.
Akadum searches around and finds there are no hidden doors out;
the unusual rug with a hexagon pattern conceals nothing beneath
it.  They gather up the cage, folding it up into an easier
to carry form, ruining it as a cage.

They head back up and tell Godfred that the Laird has gone,
but not sharing with him the awful details.  Godfred tells
them that he is not surprised.  The Laird had been increasingly
obsessed over the last few weeks and he had a feeling something
bad had happened.  He is able to confirm that Griya and the Laird
met regularly, Muzzahs from Helix also visited occasionally,
Obediah Hawkes is an alchemist from Brignorth, Bellas is an
Elven woman who is the propriator of the Sharpe Inn which is
in the Oldfeld Woods east of Duddingly.  The Laird occasional
traveled there and she has visited here.  He cannot identify
any of the other names, noting that the Laird was a complex
man with many interests and friends, many visitors, and wonders
why or how the Laird would have communication with the
notorious serial killer Fred the Shed who is imprisoned in
Middlemoor Gaol.  They tell Godfred to gather his things for
a return to Drigbolton and he heads up to his room.

Bea tells them that after the two dimensional gentleman "ate"
their meals they settled into naps.  They decide to deliver
killing blows to the animated paintings.  This goes well except
for Bea's target who comes up with a rapier and stabs
her before the others can swarm it and kill it.  Hellraiser/
Junior gathers up the very real, but two dimensional, rapiers
that the animated paintings were wielding.

They plan to make their way back to Drigbolton to get
some answers from Griya.  Junior still insists that Griya
is simply an old woman who cannot do magic and can only
make potions, poultices, and charms.  The others are not
convinced.

Second Session, 20 June 2019

Valldel Amakiir - 1st Level Male Elven Rogue
Akadum Ironbeard - 1st Level Male Dwarf Fighter
Dolin Stoneflare - 1st Level Male Dwarf Light Cleric
Shiso Shinjitsu - 1st Level Male Human Fighter
Junior Lubbins - 1st Level Female Human Fighter
Bea Miglin - 1st Level Female Halfling Fighter (NPC)

24 May 981, Tuesday, Fine spring weather, partly cloudy, cool
Drigbolton

The party awakens and are treated to a large breakfast of eggs, goat
bacon, toast, etc.  They debate what to do.  Akadum suggests they
look in the woods, Nob's Spinney where some saw another something
falling from the sky.  Maybe there will be more undead to menace
the village?

Shiso is more concerned about the falling object seen
further north near the crossroads.  It was near the Laird's manor
where the Laird and his servant Godfred Whelm, cousin to the village
Headman, Unwick, lives.  They also recall that there were some old
graves near the crossroads, which might have risen as the undead in
the church yard.  Hellraiser/Junior tells them that the Laird is
strange.  He is the last of his line, and seems uninterested in
marrying to continue the line.  Also he spends all his money on
gadgets, books, and such things.

Dolin is more interested in exploring the crater here
and seeing if there are more burning or freezing things.  Valldel
tells them that he saw an old woman poking around among the magical
things on the ground and swears that two of them were floating in
air after her.  Hellraiser/Junior tells him that was simply Griya,
the village witch.  She can't really do magic, but she can make
effective potions and charms.  For the last week or so she has been
saying that part of the Moon was coming, and once it arrived she
would be very powerful.  Valldel wants to visit her.

The Headman Unwick shows up.  He is very differential to the party
and seems to think Valldel is in charge calling him a man of honor.
He asks them if the village should send for immediate help to the
Ironguard Motte.  He notes they need a new Temple and a new Priest.
How can the village function without these?  He is also concerned
about his cousin up at the Laird's house.  They have not heard from
him in some time.  Dolin and Akadum convince him to wait until
they explore the woods and the Laird's Manor.

Shiso want to visit the Blacksmith, Breag, and collect the armor
being made for him.

They decide to split up around the village, and then head north
to the Laird's manor.  Dolin and Akadum explore the crater.  They
note that there are only a couple of the burning and steaming
things left.  The others have burned out or melted away.  The
steaming things are obviously very cold and Dolin is able to
magic one and move it around.  They can see it is surrounded
by a layer of ice, but within is a glittering crystal.  They cannot
figure out what to do with either of the two things.  They note
that there small fragments of Star Metal, but whatever the thing
was is not obvious.  It was pulverized and all that survives are
small fragments.

Valldel and Hellraiser/Junior visit Griya.  Griya's hovel seems
rather more exalted than the others in the village.  Valldel notes
that her graden out front is not simply kitchen herbs.  Perhaps
she can make something of value.  Griya invites them in.  She is
a bent crone, offering them tea and asking them what she can do
for them.  Valldel asks her how she knew part of the Moon was coming.
She tells them Hecate told her, then she was able to see part
of the moon break off, and head towards here.  How was she able
to pick the things up?  She had help from "those beyond the veil"
who are able to deal with such things and obey her commands after
a proper sacrifice.  At this point Valldel notices that Griya's
large black iron cauldron is simmering away, but there is no fire
lit beneath it.  He asks her what she has for sale.  She looks
him deeply in the eyes and says, "It does not work that way, dearie.  I
can provide what you want or need...at a suitable price.  What is
it that you want?  What is it that you need?  And what are you willing
to give up?"  Valldel is frightened by her and they leave hastily.
As they leave they see Ponsafine Unwick, pretty daughter of
the Headman, heading to visit Griya.  Valldel makes a point of
avoiding her.

Shiso and Bea visit Breag the blacksmith.  He clearly has been working
all night, and has finished altering a suit of Ring Mail for
Shiso.  He makes some last adjustment and the suit fits Shiso fine.
The family is very grateful and give Shiso some iron rations.
The blacksmith has a chunk of Star Metal that Valldel gave him
last night.  He tells Shiso that he put the metal in his forge
last night, but he was unable to get it soft for working.
It is the hardest, strongest metal he has ever seen.  Perhaps
in Tealford, large town one day's journey east, or the Dwarves
in the Wreak, Dwarven underground town just south of Tealford,
and where Dolin is from, can work with it.  It is beyond
the equipment he has here.  They do promise to watch the
handful of large, heavy chunks of Star Metal that Valldel and
Dolin gathered.  The blacksmith also confirms the Laird
favors gadgets as he has been asked to repair some.

The party meets at the north end of the village and head north
towards the cross roads.  To the west on their left they
see the woods of Nob's Spinney.  There is a large pond
directly between Drigbolton and the Spinney.  Both Bea and
Hellraiser/Junior tell the party that there is great hunting
of deer and rabbits in the Spinney.  To the east on their right is
swampy land.

As they continue north and the wood draws close to the road,
a voice calls out to them from the forest.  It insults them
and tells them to stay out of the woods if they know what
is good for them.  It laments that the people of the village
kill mothers and babies.  Some in the party note the voice
is coming from a fox, that is doing a pretty good job
staying hidden while trailing the party.  They ask if anything
strange has happened, and the fox says last night he
was suddenly able to talk with the rabbits and the deer.  It
is kind of strange talking to rabbits.  Is it still OK to
catch and eat them?  Also he has never talked to human-like
creatures before.  That is all very strange.  Did anything fall out
of the sky last night?  Something did and it fell in the
middle of the forest.  Are the talking and the falling thing
related, the fox asks.  Very likely the party tells him.  They
tell him that the animals should stay away from the fallen thing.
The fox says he will do that, the villagers should stay out of
the forest, and the animals of the forest want to talk with the
people of the village to get them to agree to stop killing mothers
and children.  It is terribly sad to see an orphan or a mother
crying over her lost children.  They agree to meet again
at dusk and the fox will take them to meet the other animals, all
of which can now talk to each other and the humans, and
see what fell from the sky.

Continuing north they get to the crossroads and see that the
ancient graves have been churned up, and they can see a trail
as if something has been dragged from the graves to the road.
At this point they cannot see the trail on the road, but Bea
has some tracking skill and she is able to note the trail
continues to the east towards the Laird's Manor.  Heading just
a short way they see the chalk cliffs and the small track that
switchbacks its way up to the top of cliff where the Manor
can be seen.

They head up the steep path and see at the top it leads to an
elegant two story manor.  There are two chimneys on either side,
a domed center, tiled paths going around both sides of building,
and a few steps up leading up to black lacquered double doors.
These are smashed and a spare but nice entry hall is visible within.

Valldel enters the entrance hall, sees stairs up, two doors to the
left and one to the right.  He can hear some sort of argument
going on beyond the far door to the left.  They all enter and
Dolin listens closely at the far left door.  There are a few
voices and they are debating whether to demand the servants
come now to serve them breakfast, or whether they should go
out and find the servants.  He opens the door and sees six well
dressed gentleman in a sitting room.  They seem to think he is
a servant and begin giving him breakfast orders.  He slams the
door noting that the walls of the room had empty picture frames.
He suggests the party stay away from there.

They go through the door on the right and find an elegant dining
room with a large table.  There is a big fireplace to their left
and a door that obviously leads to the kitchen.  They can hear
a scratching sound and some whining coming from the kitchen.
Their attention is drawn to large charts on the table.
Valldel is able to recognize them as charts of the planets/bodies
of this system.  One depicts the place they live, called Kylindo,
which has fire to one side and ice to the other.  Around it is
the Moon and 12 "Dragonstars" each depicting some sort of dragon.
The other shows the whole system with a symbol that represents
Kylindo in the lower left corner.  Orbiting around it is the Moon
and the 12 Dragonstars.  Next out is the Sun with Mercury orbiting
around it.  Then follows Venus and Mars.  There is then a number
of small dots in separate orbits.  This bunch is called the Ring
of Smoke.  Beyond is Jupiter with its four satellites and finally
Saturn with its rings.  Beyond it is thought there are numerous
frozen bodies in the outermost part of the system.  Valldell does
not remember much more as he slept through most of that class.
They gather up the charts and enter the kitchen.

There they see a pile of animated bones and a pile of animated
meat, strings of sausages for arms, hams, chickens, goats, scratching
at a door just to the left.  The animated horrors attack and they
are surprised when the pile of bones skitters through the fireplace
in the kitchen and into the dining room.  They easily defeat the
two horrors.

Behind the door is Godfred Whelm, servant to the Laird.  He was hiding
a pantry filled with dried goods and such.  He tells them that last
night he and the Laird heard a crash outside.  He went out to investigate
and fled inside when the pile of bones came up from below.  There
he got chased into the pantry by the animated pile of meat.  He has
been trapped there all night.  He does not know where the Laird is,
and is anxious that the party look for the Laird.  He suggests the
Laird is upstairs at the "Far Seer".  He tells them that he and the
Laird are the only ones here, and has no idea who the six gentleman
in the sitting room are.

Dolin looks around the kitchen and notes a door out to the back
of the house.  Looking out the windows he sees a well kept garden
which has an empty plinth as its focus.  There is no sign of the
statue that must have occupied the plinth.

After an argument about splitting up, they decide to stick together.
They check the last door off the entrance hall.  It leads to a study
with shelves of books, a comfy chair, tabacco, etc.  Valldell quickly
peruses the books and sees nothing special.  There is some fiction,
travelouges, histories, etc.  He sees nothing of value.  Above the
fireplace is a glass case.  Within is a brass arm, apparently broken
off just below the shoulder.  It is labeled "The Right Arm of the
Brass Man".  No one knows what to make of it.

They begin to head upstairs.

Commentary:  Another very good session.  Continuing with the Weird the Befell Drigbolton and a glimpse of another piece of the puzzle as Ironguard Motte is from Barrowmaze which should become the focus.  Strange things happened when I went over the first session and prepared for this session and more depth appeared in the back story.

In real world matters one of the players offered to host which is great as we no longer have to play in FLGS.  While I love FLGS, the game room is noisy and talking over the noise does not make me happy.

First Session on 6 June 2019

Valldel Amakiir - 1st Level Male Elven Rogue
Akadum Ironbeard - 1st Level Male Dwarf Fighter
Dolin Stoneflare - 1st Level Male Dwarf Light Cleric
Shiso Shinjitsu - 1st Level Male Human Fighter
Junior Lubbins - 1st Level Female Human Fighter

23 May 981, Monday
Drigbolton

It is evening in Drigbolton.  Junior and some of the town folk are in the King Deer which is run by the King family.  A bunch of people from out of town arrive.  Dolin notes that Akadum is wearing armor like he has never seen before and wonders where he is from.  Perhaps a Dwarven clan from the western side of the Tasprian Penninsula?  The King's are officious to the strangers offering them Fullmead beer, and goat stew.  Valldel tries the local ale and finds it is terrible and passes it on to Dolin, who thinks it is OK.  Akadum tries the goat stew and finds that it is delicious.  He tries to pay with a Platinum Piece and the King's have trouble making change.  Dolin is fixated on watching the skies with his spy glass.  All note Shiso's unusual dress and curved sword.  He is clearly from the far east from beyond even Koda.

Junior introduces herself to the strangers as Hellraiser and tells them that there is a Hellmouth north of town where the Clooneys live.  They are imp spawn from hell and make it dangerous to be out at night.  The Kings impart that some folks in town say something fall from the sky to the north.  They are only repeating what they have heard and cannot provide any details even under Dolin's earnest interogation.  They decide to investigate to the north, and Junior heads to her home, just across the road, finds her father drunk as usual, and puts on his old leather armor.

Suddenly they hear a roaring sound from outside, and many take cover.  There is a loud crash, and the night is suddenly lit by a red glow.  They venture outside and see that the town Temple is in ruins and on fire.  Those with sharp eyes note that skeletons and zombies have risen out of the temple grave yard and are advancing on the blacksmith's house just to the north of the ruined Temple.  One of the zombies is burning and looks like the town priest Bran.

Shiso leads one group to the west of the burning temple hiding among the hovels of the hamlet.  Dolin leads the others straight towards the temple from the south.  They have been joined by Bea Miglin, a halfing hunter.  Shiso sees the Blacksmith and one of his sons out of their house with improvised weapons preparing to meet the advancing undead.  He shouts to them to flee as Valldel, Akadum, and Bea begin bow shots at the undead, and Dolin calls down Holy Fire on them.

The Blacksmith and family flee as Shiso and Junior/Hellraiser begin fighting with the advancing skeletons with the slower zombies trailing behind.  Two skeletons confront Shiso and he is badly hurt by their attacks with improvised weapons, apparently wooden boards from their coffins.  He is healed by Dolin as the party closes in and takes out the undead horrors.  There were five skeletons, three zombies, and one burning zombie.  The blacksmith, Breag, and his family are safe having fled and then saved from further pursuit by Shisoo and Junior/Hellraiser.

As the party sighs in relief they note that some of them saw two more things falling from the sky north of Drigbolton.  Talking with Junior/Hellraiser and Bea one seems to have fallen in Nob's Spinney a bit of woods with especially good hunting to the north and west but south of the main road, while the other fell north of the road near the cross roads where the Manor House of Laird Spinnewith and the Hellmouth of the Clooneys are.

The temple is nothing more than a large bonfire, and scattered around it they can see things that are smoking and have burned away the vegetation near them, things that are surrounded by frost covered vegetation and are steaming, and glowing red hot things.  Valldel gets some water from the nearby town well and cools some of the red glowing things and sees chunks of worked metal that look like high quality steel.  He and Dolin gather a few chunks of what they dub Star Metal.  Dolin notes that it looks as if they were part of some big thing constructed thing that was smashed to pieces.

Dolin detects magic and sees that the smoking and steaming things are magic.  Junior/Hellraiser tries to put one of the smoking things in a bucket, but it is evidently very hot and melts its way through the bucket.  They decide that this stuff is not going any where and to think about what to do with it in the morning.

The townsfolk are gathering around thanking them all for saving them from the horrible undead.  The Kings offer them free lodging and meals in the King Deer, which all including Junior/Hellraiser take advantage of.  The Blacksmith Breag is especially thankful to Shisoo who warned him to flee rather than fight.  He will refurbish a suit of Ring Mail he has for him.  He will work on it all night and it should be ready in the morning.

Commentary:  Drigbolton and the locals are taken from Necrotic Gnome's The Weird That Befell Drigbolton:  https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/207631/The-Weird-That-Befell-Drigbolton.  I used the setting and characters but twisted the adventure for my own campaign.  Some of the material from Necrotic Gnome's Dolmenwood setting are salted into my Dragon Fall campaign.  That setting is rather too weird for me, but there are many great ideas that I took and mashed into The Midderlands:  https://monkeyblooddesign.co.uk/The-Midderlands/ to make my own Midlands.

At the table were two experienced players and three who were at their first fact-to-face RPG session.  Immense thanks to the two experienced who helped with character creation and gave lots of helpful advice during play.  One player showed up without being in touch before hand.  Fortunately I had prepared a couple of extra NPC's, Drigbolton locals, and she took up Junior and did a spectacularly good job.  One online contact, playing a Wizard, did not show up.  I thought it really went well.  The players seemed to have a great time.

What Everyone Knows

Humans arrived here about a thousand years ago.  They were welcomed by the Dwarves, Elves, and Halflings who were being hard pressed by fell creatures led by the Twisted Ones piling out of the Wild Lands far to the north.  The humans joined the fight providing new vigor to the defense and driving the fell creatures off.  The humans settled around the Central Sea founding the great cities of Carson, Marnor, Mora, Kivel, Canvil, Koda, and others.  Mora was the greatest of these and eventually conquered them all founding an empire that stretched from the Great Desert in the south, all the lands around the Central Sea, and to the northern Palian Mountains beyond which lay the Wild Lands.  It was a human-centric Empire, but the Dwarves, Elves, and Halflings were key contributors esteemed for their superior technical, arcane, and natural knowledge respectively.

For hundreds of years the Peace of Mora reigned, but the great Empire crumbled under plagues, barbarian invasions, and civil war.  The Empire contracted down to the hinterlands of the great city of Mora.  It was an era of city states and isolated enclaves.

About 20 years ago that began to change.  Devit became the Emperor of the much reduced Moran Empire.  He and his allies managed to reunite the squabbling cities of the Tasprian Peninsula under Devit's rule.  The cities around the Central Sea trembled with fear, began to rebuild their neglected defenses, and expand their war fleets to fend off resurgent Mora.  Just this last year Devit launched his legions north by land striking through the sparsely populated lands of the barbarians, taking the ports of Marnor and Canvil by land, and sending a column to the far northern city of Venga.

Things have begun to go wrong.  North of Marnor in the delta of the River Nor the legions have encountered a monster out of the legends; a dragon some say.  Venga has resisted with vigor apparently led by mago-mechanical constructs apparently powered by Wild Land magic.  Devit called up the 17 and 31 year olds to renew the push, and now all fear that their sons, daughters, grandfathers, and/or grandmothers will the next to be sent to the Northern Front.

Here in the Midlands the Empires legions have been sent away and the local leadership has been left on their own with the admonishment to do whatever you like but pay your ever rising tax assessment, fulfill your ever larger recruitment quotas, and make no trouble with your neighbors.  In some ways it is a good time as the ever hungry maw of the Imperial Army pays in gold for weapons, armor, wool, beer, and food stuffs which are gathered at Burnton and sent down the Troutdeep River to the coast on Dwarven steam barges.  The Midland Ring road is busy with traffic, the Dwarf mines of the Wreck are busy, Halflings are planting more acreage, and the Elves of the Oldfeld are happy to be ignored.  The mad wizard Pye in the Cairn Chase Forest is thrilled that no one is paying much attention to whatever is is he is up to.

In other ways it is a terrible time with many young people having headed north to never return, others returning with wounds that leave them unable to fight, and horrid memories.  In the absence of regular Imperial patrols banditry and fell creatures are rising. Rebels and enemies of the Empire, stirred up by Mora's great rival Koda, are becoming more active.

Well Known Places in the Midlands

Five largest towns
Burnton - largest town, famous for its breweries
Leechfeld - famous for the Triplespire Temple of Athena and the White College of Magic
Staffleford - famous for its mine machinery works and footwear
Tealford - Mining and Coal, Dwarf underground town, The Wreak, just to the south
Duddingly - Weapons works, Elves just to the east in the Oldfeld Wood

The mad wizard Pye has a tower in the center of the Cairn Chase Forest and the forest is full of his horrible minions.  It is dangerous and no one should ever cut one of its trees.  He once removed a plague of rats in Leechfeld by conjuring up mounds of poisoned cheese, which the rats ate, died by the thousands in the streets, which then rotted away over the course of the next year leaving the town worse off due to the subsequent disease and stench.  Pye collected a large payment for fulfilling his contract.

Middlemoor Goal between Duddingly and Tealford is where some of the Empire's most dangerous criminals are sent.  Most famous is Fred, fifty dead in the shed, Paxton, aka Fred the Shed.  He has been there nearly forty years and the story of his serial murder spree is still used to frighten Midland children as in "Best, be home before dark or Fred the Shed will get you and carry you to
his shed!"
